What is the difference between eyelash extensions?
If you’ve started thinking about investing in eyelash extensions for yourself, you’re probably wondering what they’re made from. I know this because I get this question about twice a week from new clients. It’s pretty simple, but for some reason there’s a lot of confusion, even with people in the industry.
Mink Lashes
True mink lashes come from the actual mink animal. It is real animal hair, chemically straightened to place on your eyelashes (AKA not vegan or animal friendly). This term is probably the most asked about. I see some people refer to any eyelash extensions, regardless of whether it’s real mink or not, as ‘minks.’ They’re using it interchangeably with individual lash extensions. I personally do not use these, like, ever. There’s no point. They increase the chances of an allergic reaction and the lash loses its curl after a couple days. Not worth it.
Faux Mink Lashes
Faux mink lashes are the industry standard, pretty much all brands use this PBT fiber, a high-quality synthetic mink-like lash. These hold their curl and are tapered on the ends to create beautiful eyelash extension sets. This is what I use.
Cashmere or Silk
Silk lashes are definitely more on the synthetic side, and look less natural than faux mink. Cashmere lashes tend to be lightweight.
Classic VS Volume
Classic lashes are the most common eyelash extensions, using one faux mink lash to one natural lash. When applied correctly, they are not damaging and can be worn for extended amounts of time. Volume lashes are 3 or more ultra lightweight lashes made into what’s called a ‘fan’ and placed on one natural lash. These 3 or more lashes weigh LESS than an individual classic lash, usually.
I love educating my clients on the difference between lashes. As a client of another lash artist myself, I would hate to not know what’s on my eyes. I encourage you to ask your service provider about the service you’re getting if you’re still unsure about extensions.
Consultations are so important, you are entering a relationship with your lash girl, so trust is important!
